Subject and Predicate / Sujeto y predicado

Every complete sentence contains two parts: a subject and a predicate. The subject is what (or whom) the sentence is about, while the predicate tells something about the subject. In the following sentences, the predicate is enclosed in braces ({}), while the subject is highlighted.


Toda oracion completa se compone de dos partes: un sujeto y un predicado. El sujeto es acerca de que (o quien)se trata, mientras que el predicado dice algo acerca del sujeto. En las oraciones siguientes, el predicado esta encerrado en parentesis, mientras que el sujeto esta remarcado.

Judy {runs}. / Judy {corre}
Judy and her dog {run on the beach every morning}. /Judy y su perro {corren en la playa cada mañana}

To determine the subject of a sentence, first isolate the verb and then make a question by placing "who?" or "what?" before it -- the answer is the subject.

Para determinar el sujeto de una oracion, primero aisla el verbo y entonces hazle una pregunta poniendo "who?" (¿quien?) o "what?" (¿que?) antes -- la respuesta es el sujeto.

The audience littered the theatre floor with torn wrappings and spilled popcorn.
(La audiencia ensucio el piso del teatro con trozos de envoltorios y palomitas derramadas.)


The verb in the above sentence is "littered." Who or what littered? The audience did. "The audience" is the subject of the sentence. The predicate (which always includes the verb) goes on to relate something about the subject: what about the audience? It "littered the theatre floor with torn wrappings and spilled popcorn."

El verbo en la oracion de arriba es "littered"(ensuciar). ¿Quien o que ensucio (el piso)? La audiencia lo hizo. "La audiencia" es el sujeto de la oracion. El predicado (que siempre incluye el verbo) va en relacion con el sujeto: ¿que hizo la audiencia? ensuciaron el piso del teatro con trozos de envoltorios y palomitas derramadas.

Como podran darse cuenta, es igual que en español tiene sujeto y predicado, y se encuentran con las misma preguntas.
