Pronombres/Pronouns

Pronouns usually refer to other words, called their antecedents because they (should) come before the pronoun. A pronoun's antecedent may be either a noun or another pronoun, but in either case, it must be clear what the antecedent is. Consider this example:

Los pronombres usualmente se refieren a otras palabras, llamados sus antecedentes porque deben ir antes del pronombre. El antecedente del pronombre puede ser tanto un sustantivo como otro pronombre,pero en cualquier caso, debe estar claro cual es el antecedente. Considera este ejemplo:

Micheline told Ruth that she would take Jerry to the barn dance. /Micheline le dijo a Ruth que llevaria a Jerry al baile del granero.

It is not clear whether the pronoun "she" in this sentence refers to Ruth or Micheline. Unless pronouns refer unmistakably to distinct, close, and single antecedents, the reader will never be sure who's going to the square dance with whom.

No esta claro si el pronombre "she" (ella) en esta oracion se refiere a Ruth o a Micheline. A menos que los pronombres se refieran sin lugar a dudas a distintos, cercanos y unicos antecedentes, el lector nunca estará seguro quien va al baile con quien.

A pronoun should have only one possible antecedent / Un pronombre debe tener un solo posible antecedente.

If there is more than one possible antecedent for a personal pronoun in a sentence, make sure that the pronoun refers only to one of them: /Si hay mas de un antecedente posible para un pronombre personal en la oracion, asegurate que el pronombre se refiere unicamente a uno de ellos:

[WRONG] Jerry found a gun in the trousers which he wore. / [ERRONEO] Jerry encontro un arma en los pantalones que usaba.

"Which he wore" could modify "trousers" or "gun." /"los cuales (él) usaba" podría modificar "pantalones" o "arma"

[WRONG] Jerry called Steve twelve times while he was in Reno. [ERRONEO] Jerry llamó a Steve doce veces mientras (él) estaba en Reno.

The pronoun "he" could refer either to "Jerry" or to "Steve." / El pronombre "él" podria referirse tanto a Jerry como a Steve.
